Check, check. One, two. One, two. Check. Check.
Um, Houston — is this thing on?
Iraqi Bundles of Love is a short-duration project, set to last about six weeks, originally intended to surge fabric and sewing (and knitting!) materials into the area around which I live in Iraq. It is timed to coincide with both Ramadan, and the departure of my units from Iraq. If you’re reading this, well — it’s kind of grown. It’s going to help a little bit more of northern Iraq than just the area around where I live.
It is intended to be a simple project, requiring little effort and little expenditures from those wishing to participate. It is based upon my assessment that sewing fanatics and quilters and knitters tend to have stashes that far exceed their actual needs, and that sewing fanatics and quilters and knitters are passionate both about sewing / quilting / knitting, and about sharing with others.
I originally though success for this project was going to be measured in tens. Somewhere along the way, after folks like Sew Momma Sew got involved (see this and this), I began to think about hundreds. Now, thanks to folks like you, I am planning for thousands.
The general premise is this. I am in Iraq, and I can get mail through the US Postal System. Willing contributors can send to me a flat-rate box of sewing / quilting supplies, all bundled up. I’d open the box, pull out the fully-contained bundle, and hand it off (with others) to our counterparts in the Iraqi Security Forces (Army and others) or the local police, for them to distribute. Some of the bundles will also be delivered by US Soldiers. The stated intent of this operation is to put sewing and quilting and knitting supplies into the hands of two types of recipients: locals who desperately need such things, and local sewing co-ops and other small businesses who have received grants or loans (typically to purchase sewing machines, rent space, etc).
That is it, in a nutshell. I owe you more on how this came to be, on ideas, on things to do and things not to do. And some links.
To get the address, leave a comment — here, there, anywhere on this site, and I’ll email it to you. If you got the address in the email already, well, you’re all set. I am not posting the mail address to the web, and am asking others to not post it, either (since this whole thing ends in September, and I leave Iraq not long after that). I completely do support you sharing it with your friends and family and guild and others, via email, etc. — just remind them about the 7 Sept. deadline for getting boxes into the mail, and pass to them the information on how to build a bundle.
If you need more information, there are frequently asked questions here and more on what to send / not to send here.
And if you’re from the press, or TV, or the media, or something like that, this page is for you.
Drop me a comment. Let’s do this!

We are on board – Our textile charity has been looking for just this kind of opportunity. Wishing you joy as you return and sending you blessing for doing this – may the nation be healed by your efforts!!!
Oh and we need the mailing address –
Sue Rock
Executive Director/Founder
Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc.
==================================
ue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc is the only textile charity committed to supporting the lives of survivors of domestic violence. With such a small percentage of women leaving domestic violence situations nationwide, we felt it was important to provide direct support to these women who have made the courageous first steps towards change. Each year we partner volunteers with donations of unused fabric samples from companies such as Marc Jacobs, Ann Gish (interior design fabrics) and Liz Claiborne. Our volunteers create NEW clothing and accessories domestic violence survivors will need as they live in in the residence. Women leaving the cycle of violence only have the clothes on their back. Volunteers create sweaters, shrugs, bags, tops and so much more!
We have established wonderful relationships with Safe Horizon, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Family Justice Center and Sanctuary for Families. As part of our mission, we train in all aspects of the textiles arts – including knitting (machine and hand), crocheting, sewing/tailoring, macrame and needlepoint.
The non-profit has a unique funding engine – Sue Rock Originals, an eco-fashion brand of women’s separates selling at boutiques throughout the Brooklyn area. Using our excess fabrics, Sue Rock Originals has created a line of “Back to Basics” separates which are flattering to every figure! Sales from these items help to financially support our organization.

I have some items I’m not sure if Muslims would use or if they would offend, i.e. ceramic swan pin cushion, rooster tape measue, etc. I think I remember something about not having images in their culture. I just heard about this project today at my quilt group, and have lots to send, but would like clarification before sending. I want this to be a nice present for someone, and not a “crass ugly American” present.

I am so excited about this project! I would love to send some materials to my sisters on that far side of the world. I don’t have a surplus of materials – I’ll have to sacrifice from materials I’ve bought for my own projects but I will so enjoy picking out the most beautiful and useful yarn and needles to give to the knitters of Iraq. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to give. I don’t have much and I really miss being as generous as I used to.

Ooh! Just found this website. Can I make the deadline?!? As an Airman who deployed for OIF, I’m hoping you’ll get enough boxes to make some available to soldiers/sailors/marines/airmen at your base.
September 5, 2009 at 1:30 am |
Wow – I have a busy weekend ahead, but I will try to get a package out Tuesday Sept. 8. I have a hand embroidered quilt made by my late ex-mother-in-law – all basted together but never quilted – but it is about twice as big as the box you specify. Can I send a larger box? Please send me the address.

Aloha,
My mom, 86, calls me this morning at 7:30, waking me from a blissful sleep to ask me to get the address so she can mail her scrap material and yards of stuff she no longer wants. She read about you in the Honolulu Advertiser. She sews for a hobby and I’m the beneficiary of her work so of course I’d do anything she wants. But I love what you are doing and you’re right about people who sew. My mother is a great example. So please send the address.

I guess I missed something – trying to fill out the proper customs form – and not sure how to go about it. There is a “military version” for APO/FPO addresses – but still needs a phone number – was going to just use mine again – but not sure that is right – and where to go from there? Please assist! Sorry if I’m missing something that is simple……THANKS! I have my box ready to go and don’t want to miss out on getting it there.
September 5, 2009 at 12:38 pm |
Please send address. My bundle is ready to go. Thank you for what you are doing.
September 5, 2009 at 12:46 pm |
Hey IBOL guy,
I got my bundle together, then after reading more about this project, I got to thinking. . . I have a 3 phase commercial sewing machine. Very Heavy – would have to be banded to a pallet or some such thing. I am going to sell it in auction in another month UNLESS you can figure out a way I could get it to a CO-OP there or some such thing. It is a long shot, but I’m happy to do the grunt work on this end if it can be arranged. Let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas or leads I could follow-up on.
September 5, 2009 at 12:46 pm |
please send the address. I have my stuff ready to go.

I just heard about this and think it’s a great idea. I’m too late to send a package for the Ramadan deadline, obviously — but am hoping this will be continued or repeated. As a quilter and a Desert Storm vet, I’d love to be able to participate! Thanks,
Pam

I donated and wanted to see what kind of turn out you had from my sister quilters. I think you did a wonderful thing by engineering this project. Please let all of us know what else we can do to help.
October 25, 2009 at 2:26 am |
HI! I sent 2 packages from Tampa at the same time. I was able to track that one arrived, but not the second. They were sent with my North Carolina address as the sender address. Is there any way to find out if the second one made it. I know they are long gone. Just wondering if a list of senders was kept.
Since they were both addressed to the same place and double checked, it seems strange that one did not make it. I asked for them to be returned to sender if not deliverable and I haven’t gotten it back.
Thanks so much for your time.
Gail
