Building a bundle

IBOL3D isn’t set to kick off until either late spring or early summer in 2011.  So, hang in there.

To participate:

1. Leave a comment on this site — anywhere on this site. I will email you a hearty thanks, and the mail address.  It’s an APO address, so it’s the same postal rate as mailing something to NY, NY.

2. Go to the post office and get yourself one of the large, flat rate to APO boxes.  It’s a good sizes box, and it’s going to be $12.50 to mail (apparently, the price went up).  Really, you can use whatever box you want, but I recommend these since they are a price-performer.

3. Form the box, tape one end close.  Put it on the floor or table.

4. Lay some ribbon (or similar) across the boxes across both axis – left to right, and front to back.  It should look like a + across the box.  This will tie your bundle close in the end.

5. Find a nice piece of fabric, large enough, and lay it into the box.  This is the outer layer of your bundle.  It can be one big piece, round or square, or two long and wide strips put into the box in the same manner as the ribbon.

6. Now, add the goodies.  Doing this right into the box, on top of this outer layer, means you should have a pretty good idea of just how full the box is.  Add a little, add a lot — add whatever you want.

7. Fold the outer layer over the top.

8. Bring those ribbons together on top.  Check and make sure all the goodies are secured inside the little bundle of love, and then tie it close.

9. Tape the box sealed, fill out the address label.  Feel free to get creative, and doodle on the sides.  Grab your $12.50!

10.  Head to the post office, fill out a big, white Customs form, and send it on its way.

Do you want batting and backing fabric as well? Thanks for your great work in helping others to help themselves!

I am not posting the mail address to the web, and am asking other to not post it, either (since this whole thing ends in September, and I leave Iraq not long after that). 99. janet Says:

What a great thing you are doing…please send the address as I would be delighted to share. Greater than 20 years ago I had a pen pal in Yugoslavia who had No access to any things quilty, I shared as much as I could and she shared down the line and many new quilters came of that exchange. It will be so nice to be a tiny part of that process again. May we include address information, obviously NOT for any acknowledgment, but in the hope of starting new friendships?

Having lived 23 years in foreign countries and now a retiree learning to quilt, I can appreciate how much what you are doing will boost the moral of the Iraqi women. Some friends and I started a sewing group in the last third world country I lived is and bought cutting mats, roller cutters, scissors and yards of fabric for the ladies there. Some were very interested in my cross stitch projects so got them started in that. Even bought drug store glasses for those who needed glasses to see to do the work but would never be able to afford an eye check let alone glasses. We’d get together in my home and what wonderful times we had. In a place where so little seems like so much, I applaud you for your efforts and for that of all those who are taking a little bit of their things to send. Scissors are huge! Now PLEASE send your address so I can get this in the mail!!! Can’t seem to find it anywhere. All the best, Sue

  451. Mary Lou Noble Says:

Does it have to be a large box? The kit I got only has small and medium. I have to mail it tomorrow.

  452. Bridget Wideman Says:

I love it when I can cram a ton of stuff into a flat-rate box….it’s nice and heavy too 🙂 This was so much fun! I needed to sort and get rid of some stuff I don’t/won’t use. I used to use a genearl all-purpose thread, but since I’m a quilter now I only use “good” quilting thread; so, I had LOTS to give. My crochet days are behind me, so I no longer need all those crochet hooks. I crammed as much yarn in as I could, but mainly I wanted to pile up on the fabric (just like every other quilter in the US, I have more fabric that I could ever possibly use in a lifetime). I also seem to have two of everything in the notions department, so it was great that I had so much to give. An added bonus for me is that when and if my house ever sells, we will hopefully move to a house that’s half the size. This house is too much for us to take care of now that we’re no longer in our 20’s or 30’s…so, I have to part with stuff sooner or later! And I don’t do garage sales, so whenever I have things I no longer want/need, I donate them. This is a fun way to donate! I wish it were an on-going project (I’m keeping my eye on that possibility). My box is ready to go to the Post Office when do my errands today…I do still have that stupid customs form to fill out! There is no way I can list every item, but I certainly don’t want it to be held up in customs! I would think that since it’s going to our military they would have a special US MILITARY EZ FORM to fill out. My name and address, recipients name and address and a general statement on the contents with no dollar amount (misc. sewing/quilting/crochet stuff; the kind of stuff a wife sends to a hubby in the service; misc. stuff from so-and-sos mom, etc. MISC STUFF should be sufficient!

Well, I should go start filling out that form….lets see now…. 348 1″ small head stainless steel straight pins in a 1.5″x1.5″ acrylic box with a rubber band tied around the box, 2 chalk-based marking pencils (one black, one white) that are approximately 7″ long and have the leads sharpened to 1/4″, a 3 yard by 42″ piece of 100% cotton fabric with muted stripes in shades of blue and gray, an 8″ pair of dressmaker shears packed in a papertowel tube so as not to poke anyone, a 2000 yard cone (made of heavy cardboard) wrapped with 100% cotton yard, ecru in color, etc. etc. etc. Guess I’ll have to attach 2 or 3 typewritten pages in order to fully describe each item! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have fun! I’m sure having fun with this. I only wish I’d have heard about it sooner so I could have done more. Then again, being the optimist that I am (yea, right), I’m really glad I wasn’t too late and I DID hear about it in time.

Thank you! God Bless You! Take Care and BE SAFE!

I no longer make clothes, quilts, etc. . . . .limit myself to keeping the buttons on and rips sewed . . . .but have a lot of miscellaneous left-overs and I’ve been wondering where I can “recycle” them. This sounds like a good idea. I lived for a while in Thailand and in Pakistan, and know how people with limited resources can and will make good use of what we in the USA usually throw out. Do you have to “bundlea” the fabric? I already sealed a box (I can open it if needed, but just packed it as full as i could) and sill have another one to seal up that I will do the correct way.

Would appreciate receiving the address. Is there some reason that the address could not have been already included in the information provided about making the bundles? It would have facilitated people getting them off in a hurry.

Thank you for what you are doing.

Will you be starting this program again? I read the article in the Columbus Dispatch and understand it will be starting again? I have copied the article and handed it out to quilt shops in Tennessee on a recent trip. Please inform.

  517. IBOL Guy Says:

Well, I have found one guy who is moving to Northern Iraq right about now, and he’s checking to see if they can try something like this. Yes, he’s the guy from the Columbus newspaper article — his mom is an IBOLer (I just love saying that). And me, well, I flew back to America last night, from 2 weeks in Iraq. Yes, I, too, am headed back for one last year in Iraq. I have no idea if I can try something like IBOL again this time around. I’m trying to figure something out.

Please send me the address. I live in Vancouver, Canada, so it may take a little while to arrive. Do you think I’m too late?

    thanks, Jessica

    • IBOL Guy Says:

Canada is OK with me, You’re good. Intent is to get stuff into the mail about the same time — there are so many other variables after that, well, that starting in Canada shouldn’t impact things much.

  612. Carolyn Says:

I have two packages ready to ship once I have the address. Thanks.

  613. Edwina J Murray Says:

Just a word of caution about strange or different emails. I just received an email on an account I use very seldom, and it is not connected at all with IBOL. It said that a package I had just sent could not be sent because of a mistake in the address. And on a different date from when I went to post office. Of course, I was eager to open it and it didnt work. So I called the post office. They told me they would never send an email about a package. And furthermore there was nothing on the customs form or my package to indicate my email address…gee I knew that and wondered about it! but still called to check.

Since the IBOL packages are the only thing I have sent through the USPS in a long time…I was curious as to what had gone wrong or I would have deleted it immediately. So long story, a little shorter…check those messages before opening them! My is deleted and hopefully did no damage!

    • IBOL Guy Says:

Edwina, thanks for the note. I’ve not heard of this happening to others, but it’s a good thing to be attentive to. I have just the one email, so if there’s no email from the USPS about packages, and it’s not from my one email account — yes, be wary!

  614. Sharon Says:

I’ll get some boxes packed and out the door by Oct 1 – Please email me the address. Thanks!

Hi I have 7 bundles ready to go. please email me the address!!

I am late! I’d like the address in the event that you’re going to continue this project. I have a lot of fabric and notions to share.

  618. Gayle Says:

Please let me know when this starts up again; I cannot believe I didn’t find it until after the deadline. I have sewing, knitting, and embroidery supplies to send. Would patterns be something needed, too? I know lots of people (myself included) don’t even usually use the instruction sheets, just use the pattern pieces for the shape of the garment and use their own knowledge to construct. I have for men, women, and children, as well as household items.
Also, is there any talk of something similar starting up in Afghanistan? My husband is a logistician currently in country, and I’ve been looking for a good charity over there to get myself and my children involved in. If there isn’t, and you can provide me with any information on possibly getting started over there, it would be appreciated greatly.

  619. melanie Says:

Don’t know why IBOL popped into my head tonight, but I’m glad it did. Stay safe overseas, my friend.

I’m so sorry to hear about the PTSD. I have it as well. I was assaulted when I was little and testified about it. For decades I thought I had RPD (Rotten Personality Disorder) only to discover, in my late 40s, that it was an almost lifelong case of PTSD. So it goes. . .

I’ll keep an eye on the blog. Meanwhile, please send me the address for IBOL3D and I’ll start getting ready. I don’t know if I can muster another 19 boxes of fabric, but I am clearing out my Mom’s knitting and crochet stockpile. . .

sending fondness to you and yours,
    Melanie
